Church Clarity is Re-Launching and Recruiting Board Volunteers
The current volunteer stewardship of Church Clarity is recruiting members to join its inaugural board of directors with the goal of relaunching the organization with a formal 501(c)(3) status.
ChurchClarity.org is a crowd-sourced, volunteer-verified website database that scores Christian churches’ websites based on how easy it is to find a church’s actively enforced policies for LGBTQ+ people and women in stewardship. Co-founded by George Mekhail, Kai Ngu, and Tim Schrader in 2017, the database was run primarily by volunteer efforts and personal funds. It currently has close to 7,000 churches submitted to the database, with almost 5,000 churches’ scores published on the website. The co-founders departed in 2020, and a core set of long-time volunteer leaders—Spencer Noble, Adrian Waller, and Phil Lucia—have taken over stewardship roles. Kai Ngu has served as an advisor to this team. Since 2020, the volunteer stewardship team has worked hard in this transition period of many changes and disruptions to keep the organization afloat.
A key obstacle that this team faced was the severance of the connection between ChurchClarity.org’s back-end database and front-end website, preventing the website from being updated. In 2024, the team contracted a developer to fix this connection, which means that the website can now be updated.
While Church Clarity is primarily a technological product, the technology only runs as well as there is sufficient labor to operate it. Thus, we are pausing any processes of scoring churches — with the exception of important updates to church entries, which we will do when we have capacity — until we re-launch Church Clarity.
This re-launch begins by establishing formal governance of the organization: Recruiting a board of directors and incorporating as a formal 501(c)(3) status. The board of directors will be responsible for the vision, strategy, fundraising, communications, management oversight, as well as establishing ownership over the organization’s assets (e.g. website, database, social media accounts with thousands of followers). Spencer and Kai will serve on the board of directors, while the rest of the current team will remain as volunteer leaders. Church Clarity’s current financial needs are met by the current volunteer stewardship team, and any cost of filing incorporation documents will be covered by the current volunteer stewardship team.
The mission and vision of Church Clarity have not changed: Ambiguity is harmful. Clarity is reasonable. And we continue to score churches on the clarity of their policy communication. The current volunteer stewardship team believes the current mission and vision are crucial to the ongoing work of the organization, but also welcomes new ideas, methodology, and strategy from a new board. It would be up to the future board of directors to agree to any future changes.
These are the responsibilities and roles we are looking to fill:
Board of Directors:
Volunteer leaders:
