We've added 200 more churches to our database bringing our total to over 400 churches. Take a few moments to read this newest update which outlines details about the ongoing evolution of our scoring methodology. Thanks to our wonderful volunteer team, we're working through them as quickly and efficiently as possible, while prioritizing the integrity of our scoring process. We appreciate your support as we continue to establish a new standard for clearly communicated church policies.

Introducing Church Clarity Badges

Church Clarity Badges reveal a church's policies for LGBTQ people—they are the clearest scores that a church can receive. Instead of having a score such as “Clear + Affirming,” participating churches will instead have a Clarity Badge that displays their responses to these four questions: Will you currently baptize an LGBTQ+ person? Will you, in your own building and with your clergy, currently officiate a marriage for LGBTQ+ people? Will you currently hire LGBTQ+ people for any role? If your church does not control hiring, will it currently receive an LGBTQ+ person into any role? Will your church currently ordain LGBTQ+ people? If your church does not have authority to ordain, will it currently recommend for ordination? The three options will be: Yes, No, or Actively Discerning. The answers will be collected from surveys via emails to churches.

Why Church Websites?

We’ve chosen church websites as our way of scoring a level of church’s clarity simply because an organization’s website serves as a centralized location for the public to understand critical information about an organization. It is the main place that people turn to in order to find out what they can expect. Similarly, people looking for a church should be able to understand clearly what a church believes, what they can expect when they attend, and policies the church has around issues that matter to a lot of people (LGBTQ+, women, people of color, etc.).

Clarifying Church Clarity: What It's Not and What It's For

An Update This week, we are shifting our focus to respond to the demand for #ChurchClarity! We have over 600 church submissions and nearly 200 advocate submissions. To keep up, we are increasing our capacity, and scaling up so that our website can be up-to-date. Our plan is to upload a huge batch of churches and advocates by Sunday the 29th.
